Charles George Nieman was born at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, on July 15, 1930 to Hazel Klingelhoffor Nieman and Stanley Linkrneyer Nieman of Aurora, Indiana. He grew up in Aurora, a small town beside the Ohio River, near Cincinnati. His father died of influenza when Charles was five years old. He was nurtured by both of his two grandfathers with one living in their home and the other taking him to all the Cincinnati Reds baseball games. His older brother, James Richard Nieman and younger sister, Joan Carol Nieman, preceded Charles in his death on October 9,2020 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Charles was an Eagle Scout and graduated from Aurora High School l in 1948. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, earned a BS degree in Economics with high honors, and an ROTC Air Force commission in 1952 just as the Korean Conflict was starting. He later received an MBA from Michigan State University and headed the Air Force ROTC program as a professor of military science at the University of Tulsa.
Retiring as a Lt Colonel in 1980 after serving 28 years as a Navigator on the B- 36 and B- 52 being stationed in Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio, Guam, Okinawa, Thailand, Guam, and North Dakota and later as a Comptroller of NKP Air Force Base and Finance Officer of Robins Air Force Base, Warner Robins, Georgia . He was awarded the Bronze Star during the Vietnam War. After military service he was an accountant for the Department of Housing and Urban Development
and later a senior accountant for the State of Georgia.
Charles was a Christian, a longtime active member of Briarlake Baptist Church and the Progressive Men's Bible Class. He also attended Springvale/Shiloh Baptist Church when he and Suzanne were in South Georgia. He was a member of Druid Hills Golf Club and served as president of his neighborhood board, the Amberwood Civic Association. In retirement years Charles enjoyed his grandchildren, the Cincinnati Reds baseball team, his neighborhood Poker Club, golf, traveling the world, sampling every kind of pie,
jigsaw puzzles, and spending time watching sunsets on the family farm in Springvale , GA.
He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Joiner Nieman of Atlanta and son, Michael Paul Nieman, daughter-in-law Carmen Ray Nieman, and grandchildren, Daniel Ray Nieman, Anna Marie Nieman, Charles Watson Nieman, and McArthur James Nieman of the Atlanta area. Nieces and nephews include Ruth Ann Campbell (Richard), Laura Burns(Marshall), Brian McGraw(Kirst in), William Waters, Anthony McGraw, Lisa Granger(William), Stanley Nieman (Ca rroll), George Nieman(Marcie), Kenneth Nieman (Cheryl),James Nieman and many great nephews and nieces.
