Gary is survived by his wife Lynda (Lovejoy); daughters Jeanette Schofield of Tucker, Georgia, Kathy Schofield of Anderson, South Carolina and Samantha Schofield of Decatur, Georgia; his brothers Paul Schofield, Don Schofield, and Mark (Melinda) Schofield; sister-in-law Barbara (Bill) Coates; a precious granddaughter, Amelia Jones of Anderson, South Carolina; niece Tracy Schofield Robertson; nephews Johnathan (Courtney) Schofield, Ryan Schofield, Justin Coates, and Kevin (Amanda) Coates.
He is preceded in death by his parents John and Mary (Donnelly) Schofield.
Gary was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania February 16, 1951, one of four boys. The family moved to Decatur, Georgia when he was six years old. He went to grammar school at Saint Thomas More Catholic School and graduated from Druid Hills High School in 1970. He married his high school sweetheart, Lynda, in 1975. They met at Medlock swimming pool as teenagers, dated in high school, and were married 44 years before his death. Gary retired from commercial printing in 2001.
Gary was a loving husband and father. His favorite place to be was the beach, splashing and swimming in the ocean or fishing. He was thrilled to help his great-nephew Andrew (Robertson) learn to fish and to share his love of fishing and the water with his daughters. Family vacations and holidays were his best-loved times of the year. He enjoyed classic movies and shared a love of Disney with his family. He was a loyal and dependable friend, always willing to help whether it was taking someone to doctor/dentist appointments, ushering at Mass, or helping at the neighborhood swimming pool. Gary’s sense of humor and easy-going nature will be missed by all who knew him.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, October 16, at Saint Thomas More Catholic Church, at 2:00 p.m. Visitation with the family will be from 1:00 to 2:00 before the service.
