Edna Mae Everitt, 99, passed away Sunday, May 10, 2020. She was born on February 28, 1921 in Decatur, GA to George Edward Everitt and Leona Hill Everitt. She lived a joyful and grace filled life putting all her trust in the Lord, therefore never worrying about anything. Her motto was “Bloom where you are planted” and not only did she bloom everywhere she went but lit up the lives of all she touched even in her years of decline. She never drove a car, but traveled all over the world.
She attended the University of Georgia and the Art Institute in Atlanta for a short period before moving to Miami where she was administrative assistant to the head of pathology at the University of Miami School of Medicine for 29 years. She retired to Melbourne, FL and eventually came to live her final years in Knoxville, TN.
She loved the orchids she raised, was an artist, played golf and tennis, made ceramics in her home kiln, wrote poetry, some published, and was a prolific letter writer. She had a great passion for family genealogy, leading her to become an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Ed, sister Dot, niece Lynne Everitt Thrailkill, and grandnephew Ernest Alan Everitt. She is survived by her brother George Everitt, nephews Steve (Kathie) Shepard, Tom (Beth) Everitt, David (Suzi) Everitt, Dan (Lynn) Everitt, and many great and great-great grand nieces and nephews.
Due to COVID-19 a private Christian burial was held on May 14, 2020 at City of Decatur Cemetery with David Jones officiating.
A poem written by a great niece sums her up perfectly:
The Quail
There’s a lady who laughs like a quail,
She neither old nor frail,
She has the heart of child,
So tender and mild,
The lady who laughs like a quail
There’s a lady who laughs like a quail,
Who still sends hand written mail,
She’s quick with a story of memories and glory,
This lady who laughs like a quail.
There’s a lady who laughs like a quail,
Who got on a boat to sail,
She’s adventurous and strong,
So her life will be long,
This lady who laughs like a quail.
There a lady who laughs like quail,
Whose kindness will never fail,
She sings like a dove,
She is beauty and love,
This angel who laughs like a quail.
