

Elizabeth “Mimi” MacDonald Cartier, age 96, passed away May 8, 2013. Elizabeth was born in Dalzell, IL on October 12, 1916 to Carrick MacDonald & Edith Edwards MacDonald. She moved with her family to Chicago where she attended college & worked for an insurance firm that later became CNA Financial Corporation. She married Stanley J. Cartier and moved to several cities during his sales career with the Formica Company including Charlotte, Atlanta, Los Angeles, & Cincinnati. They returned to Atlanta in 1966, settling in the Smoke Rise community of Stone Mountain. She claimed Atlanta as her home and made many friends participating and excelling in bridge, bowling and golf. Elizabeth was a long time member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, and she served as a volunteer in the Red Cross Grey Lady Service at the GA Elk’s Aidmore Hospital for crippled children. She and Stan enjoyed traveling and took many trips and cruises with their family and friends. Elizabeth was an avid sports fan and amazed the younger generation with her knowledge of baseball, football, golf and tennis. She was so pleased when her only great-granddaughter, Elizabeth, was named in her honor. Two years ago, Elizabeth moved to Merrill Gardens Assisted Living in Roswell where she enjoyed keeping her mind sharp by reading two newspapers daily, completing the crossword puzzles in ink and rarely missing “Jeopardy”. The family expresses their thanks and gratitude to her many caregivers at Merrill Gardens as well as the staff of Halcyon Hospice Care.
Elizabeth is survived by her daughter, Judy Cartier Elrod of Roswell, GA, her son Philip S. Cartier of Decatur, GA, grandchildren Dena (Chris) Manzo of Gainesville, GA, Jay Elrod of Tucker, GA, Shayne (Tom) Hayes of Grayson GA, nephew Jim (Claudia) Thomson, Peoria AZ, niece Alison Thomson, Bolingbrook, IL, cousin Janet Bauer, Evanston, IL, 6 great-grand children and several great-nephews and a great-niece. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her three sisters Edith Adams, Janet Thomson & Eileen MacDonald, and a granddaughter, Wendy Gibson. A funeral for family and friends will be held May 11, 2013 at noon in the Chapel of Floral Hills Funeral Home in Tucker, GA with Rev. Nancy F. Lane officiating. Interment will follow at the Floral Hills Memory Gardens with her great-grandsons Hunter Gibson, Alex Gibson, Landon Hayes, Austin Hayes and Sam Manzo serving as Pallbearers.
