Born on January 6, 1926 in Elba, Alabama, Hazel was the youngest of ten children of Forrest “Frost” Brunson, Sr. and Ida Kate Sinquefield Brunson. In Elba, she met Hayden O’Neal Prior whom she married in 1944. Eventually they settled in Atlanta where they raised their three sons Charles Michael, Thomas Edwin and John William.
Hazel and Hayden were founding members of Briarlake Baptist Church, Decatur, GA., where they were active members throughout their lives. At BBC Hazel taught Sunday School, worked with Mother’s Day Out and expanded on her love of cooking while working as a church caterer. Hazel was also a beautician for many years.
After taking an art class at Briarlake, Hazel developed a passion for oil painting. Over the years she gifted her artwork to family, friends and even acquaintances.
As busy as she stayed, Hazel’s happiest times were being a wife, mother and much loved “Granny” and great-granny. She enjoyed time with her family and friends at their vacation home at Lake Lanier and at their farm in Winder. She and Hayden hosted and joined in many fun parties and camping trips with their Briarlake friends and she was always quick to laugh and have a good time.
Hazel was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Hayden, and her nine siblings. She is survived by her sons and their spouses, Mike (Barbara), Tom (Laura) and John (Kris); in addition to her nine grandchildren, Shaun Harrell, Jeffrey Prior, Susan Chance, Steven Prior, Wesley Prior, Amanda Wylie, Melissa Jennings, Bryant Jones and Justin Jones; her nineteen great grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff for the loving care she received at Benton House in Decatur, GA. And, they would also like to thank those with Lotus Blossom Hospice that cared for Hazel in her final weeks.
