Ida Elizabeth Russell Ramsey Chandler
1928—2021
ATLANTA, GEORGIA
Elizabeth Chandler, 93, peacefully passed away in her granddaughter’s Atlanta home surrounded by loved ones on December 14, 2021. Also lovingly known as “Libby”, “Queen Elizabeth”, “Grannymother”, “Grannymother 3”, and “Memommy”, Elizabeth was born on October 14, 1928 in Acworth, Georgia to William Arthur Russell and Beulah Levada Prickett Russell. Elizabeth graduated from Acworth High School in 1946 and worked first for the United States Army at Fort McPherson and the remainder of her 30 years of federal service in the Procurement and Grants Office at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta. After her retirement, she worked at the Golden Key National Honor Society and enjoyed travelling with family and her lifetime CDC friend, Cynthia Alred.
Elizabeth was lucky in love to have been married to Lewis Haden Ramsey for over 40 years until his death in 1991 and then to J.B. Chandler in 2000 until his passing in 2019. She kept her spirits high by cheering for the Georgia Bulldogs and the Atlanta Braves, spying for eagle’s nests at Fort Pickens, keeping her eyes on the sky for the Blue Angels, catching an annual sunset dinner at The Oar House in Pensacola, and by working crossword and jigsaw puzzles near daily with her beloved caregivers, all of whom she loved as extra children.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Beulah Russell and her sisters Margaret Russell, Barbara Russell, and Dorothy Jo Bates, her brother Richard B. Russell, her husband Lewis, her husband J.B., her grandson Duane Bentley Brownlow, and her beloved cat “Tip” who died a few hours before she did just so he could be a part of her “Welcome Committee.” She is survived by her sister Janice Dabbs of Smithville, Mississippi, daughter Theresa Brownlow McDonald (Gerald) of Union City, Georgia, daughter Shelia Ramsey of Pensacola, Florida, daughter Yvonne Ramsey of Jefferson, Georgia, son Phillip Ramsey (Mary Lou) of Clarkston, Georgia, stepdaughter Diane Grubbs (David) of Palmetto, Georgia, stepdaughter Carol Chandler of Fayetteville, Georgia, and stepson Dennis Chandler also of Fayetteville, Georgia, her four grandchildren Bryan Brownlow, Lee Ann Brownlow Ramsey, Nicholas Buttimer and Zachary Buttimer, eight great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. For over six years, Elizabeth enjoyed serving as the Queen Matriarch of her five-generation family. She also deeply loved her extra grandson Truett Nichelson, and many special caregivers and helpers, including Kennie Taylor, Veron Regis, Saint Ola Mapp, Leonard Kimbrough, Austyn Harris, and Marina Bautista.
