Karen Powers

She is survived by her husband Dennis Kevin Dunn. Having married August 19, 1974, they were just shy of their 48th wedding anniversary.

Karen was born February 19, 1949 in Columbia SC to Dennis C. and Winifred (Shealy) Powers, Jr. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Dennis C. Powers, III.

Karen attended Emory University. She lived in Charleston while Dennis was in the Coast Guard. She and Dennis moved to and lived in Atlanta after his discharge from the Coast Guard.

She worked in the medical field and the business world as well as working for His Eminence at the Metropolis for 13 years.

Karen considered becoming a Lutheran minister at one point in her life, but she and Dennis converted to Orthodoxy and joined Saint John the Wonderworker. For eight years she was a Sunday school teacher and president of the church council. She believed that, other than the priest, the Sunday school teacher was the most important liturgical entity imparting Christianity to the next generation.

She loved to read - as many as three books at a time, making weekly trips to the library for new material. She was most interested in history and biographies. Karen’s other pleasure in life was making or giving small gifts or tokens that perfectly suited the recipient.

Her hobbies included making jewelry, gardening, and cooking. Her rule was: she didn’t make any recipe that had more than five ingredients nor anything that called for separating eggs!

Karen had a dry wit and a keen sense of humor. She loved engaging with people especially if they held a different point of view. She was curious about all things. She was a gentlewoman and a scholar. We will sorely miss her presence among us.
