Luther “Leon” Wood, 92 of Brookhaven, GA passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 19, 2022 following an extended illness. He was born in Atlanta in 1929 and, like his father before him, was a driver by trade. He started out driving a tractor trailer for Reynolds Aluminum and went on to drive a taxi around the streets of Atlanta for many years. During his taxi career he was awarded the Certificate of Merit and the Atlanta Ambassador Certificate by Mayor of Atlanta, Andrew Young. He ended his driving career as a school bus driver for DeKalb County.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and often shared stories of his time in Germany during the Korean Conflict.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Lucille Wood and stepmother Marie Wood, sister Norma Jean, brother Thomas, son Richard and grandson Shane. He is survived by his wife Alberta, children Michael Wood and Kathy Gable (Thomas), grandchildren Kelly, Joe, Kevin (Jesus), Alexis, Kasey and Wesley, six great-grandchildren, sister Gloria Kimmons (Steve) and several nieces and nephews.
Leon loved the Lord and gospel music. He also loved his truck, cars, car shows, races and boxing. What he enjoyed the most was spending time with his family, his wife of 67 years, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom he called “his riches”. Leon never met a stranger and loved sharing stories with anyone who would listen.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, May 25th at 11am at Floral Hill Funeral Home in Tucker, GA, Dr. David Cooper officiating. In case of inclement weather, the service will be held in the chapel. A reception will immediately follow.
