Barbara A Mellman-Skinner

Born in Southern California, Barbara Ann Schrepfer grew up in Huntington Park. Barbara’s ambition led her to Business School after which she immediately launched her business career with Fruehauf Trailers. Even as a young woman, she displayed an extraordinary sense of purpose, work ethic, and care—traits that would define her both personally and professionally.

When Barbara entered the outdoor and shooting sports industry, she faced barriers few women had yet crossed. Through dedication, intelligence, and her unshakable grace, she not only excelled—she became a trailblazer and a beloved mentor to many. For 22 years, Barbara served as Public Relations Director for Bushnell Optics, where she became one of the most respected and trusted figures in the field. Her encyclopedic knowledge of optics, her professionalism, and her generous support made her a fixture at trade shows, press events, and in the hearts of those who worked alongside her. Colleagues and friends recall that she never knew a stranger. She was the first to extend a helping hand, share her expertise, and make introductions that often launched careers. Her desk—or the press room at the SHOT Show, where she could always be found smiling and offering a cup of coffee—became a hub of connection and encouragement.

Barbara married the love of her life, Stan Skinner, a Vietnam veteran, sportsman, editor, and author. Together, they formed an extraordinary partnership in their shared devotion to the outdoors. Stan passed earlier this year, in May 2025, and now the two are reunited.

Barbara is survived by her step daughters, Carlye Skinner Glowacki and Carrie Skinner Haden, as well as many friends, colleagues, and fellow outdoor enthusiasts. Barbara inspired countless people to pursue their passions without compromise. She will be remembered as a trailblazer, a teacher, a friend, and one of the true great ladies of the outdoor world.

A private memorial service will be held at Calvary Cemetery and Mortuary in Los Angeles, California.
