In sharing these words about the short life of Desiree, we capture only a snapshot of a sweet girl. To me, I say she was one of God's favorite daughters.
Desiree had several nicknames. Her younger brother David called her "Freddy" because he couldn't pronounce Desiree. Aunt Vicki named her "Daisy Mae" because she was such a flower., Desiree loved daisies. Her mother named her Desiree because the name in French means "desire," which she demonstrated by desiring to help others even at the young age of 8. She was involved in the church through activities such as plays, Sunday school, and worship in her youth.
Because of her involvement with church, she noticed I didn't go and asked if I wanted to go with her. I had replied no. A few weeks had passed, and she approached me again and asked if I wanted to go with her. I still said no. She said, "How about I hop up here in bed with you and we talk about it?" That captured my heart. I jumped up, got dressed, and have been going since. She saved me. God was working through her.
Her Mom enrolled Desiree in pre school at Casas Adobes Baptist Church School. Later, her mom home schooled her for a year. From there she attended Harelson Elementary and then Cross Jr. High. She spent one year at Mountain View High School before transferring to Canyon del Oro High School.
Desiree was quite an athlete. She joined the girls' track team and was part of the 4x4 relay team. She was a high jumper and for a while held the freshman low hurdle record. Desiree graduated from CDO High, class of 1996.
Later, she enrolled in college at ASU where she studied finance and art. Barbara, Desiree's mom, enrolled her in modeling school at age 8 for a few years, and at the age of 18, Desiree was called to try out for Glamour magazine. After a few days, she decided that line of work wasn't for her.
Upon graduation from college, Desiree was highly sought after by an elite investment company where she worked for about 10 years in her field of expertise. She was considered one of the top 10 women in Scottsdale in her field. A few years later, the company was sold, and Desiree moved on. She then started dabbling in real estate and pursuing her passion for art. She had various jobs.
Desiree met a handsome man by the name of Cedric Robinson and, in time, had a beautiful son named Rhys Michael Robinson. Desiree was an excellent mother, caring for him dearly. When Rhys was about 4 years old, I, Desiree's dad, went to Phoenix to babysit him for a week. Rhys and I would play games, and I decided to rest for a bit. So I laid on his mother's bed. At his young age, he was trying to protect his mom and emphatically told me to get out of his mother's bed (smile).
Desiree was a gourmet cook; she made some of the most delicious meals. Her son Rhys loved her butter cake.
Desiree was in a bad accident which left her in chronic pain. Several years passed, and Desiree's body started to fail. She suffered for about 5 years. On July 24, 2024, she was admitted to St. Mary's Hospital and shortly passed away in the ICU, where doctors and nurses did all they could to save her life but were unable to. She passed away on July 26th, 2024, at 4:45 p.m.
Desiree leaves behind her 15-year-old son Rhys; Rhys's father Cedric; Mother Barbara Beck; Father Jay Bacon; Brothers Alonzo Bacon, Adrian Bacon, and David Bacon; Uncles Joy, Don, and Tommy; Aunts Vicki, Penny, Delphine Bacon, Lillie Car, and Eva Hawkins; and a number of extended kin.
Adrian (Brother):
**In Loving Memory of Desiree**
My beautiful sister, Desiree Chante (Bacon) Owen, left this world on July 26, 2024, at 4:45 p.m. to join God in heaven, reuniting with the many loved ones who have passed before her. Her departure was swift and unexpected, leaving us heartbroken yet grateful that she no longer suffers from the chronic pain she endured for years. I was fortunate to be by her side during her passing, and she went peacefully. I pray this brings some solace to anyone mourning her loss.
Desiree fell ill and was admitted to St. Mary's Hospital with double pneumonia. She was placed in a medically induced coma, from which she never awakened. The infection spread throughout her body, leading to organ failure. Despite efforts to resuscitate her, it was clear her body could no longer sustain her. We expressed our love and told her it was okay if she was ready to go. After removing the breathing tube, her heart and breathing slowed, and she passed peacefully.
Desiree leaves behind her 15-year-old son, Rhys, who is starting high school this year and dreams of becoming an NBA star. Despite not having much, Desiree always extended acts of kindness, offering a place to stay and meals to those less fortunate. She loved cooking and creating art, living a life full of generosity despite her modest means. She was not prepared to leave us at 46, and we were not prepared to lose her so suddenly.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and for loving my sister. Your support means everything to us during this difficult time.
