He was born January 12, 1950 on his parent’s anniversary in Dearborn, Michigan to Donald Sr. and Carmella Meehan. The second of their eight children, he was bright and even skipped a grade in elementary school before graduating from Fordson High School in 1967. He served in the Army in the Vietnam War from 1968 until his honorable discharge in 1972. He received his Bachelors of Science (1977) from the University of Arizona and his Masters of Engineering (1980) from Texas Tech University.
After graduate school, he began working at the Veterans Administration Hospital, first in Richmond, VA, then Sepulveda, CA, and finally Tucson, AZ. For 25 years he served as an IT manager, contributing to the success of what is now one of the premier healthcare information systems. Following his retirement from the VA he continued this work with DSS Inc. While his work included pioneering medical records systems, the true legacy of his VA career was meeting his wife, Patricia, at the VA Medical Center in Richmond. They were married in 1981 and continued to work closely together, having lunch together every day for the rest of their careers. They were married for 43 wonderful years and raised two daughters.
His enthusiasm for classic American cars was legendary; he enjoyed working on cars, going to car shows, and most of all driving his many convertibles and Corvettes “TD” (top down). He and Patricia took the first of their countless cross country road trips on their honeymoon, launching a lifetime of memorable family vacations. After retirement, he and Patricia explored the sights of Europe and Asia, never going to the same place twice, while reserving summers for time in Michigan with his parents. Between travels, Don kept busy with home improvement projects on each of their houses and later projects in his daughters’ homes. He enjoyed regular friendly poker games with friends and fellow veterans. A fan of all kinds of music, classic rock, to classical, blues, and jazz, he attended concerts at every opportunity, whether at home or travelling.
Don is survived by his wife Patricia, daughters Alison Meehan and Michelle Lunn (Will), two grandchildren, Benton and Eli Lunn; siblings Donna Mersberg, Beth Farkas, Mary Hutter (Paul), Susan Powers (Jesse), Teresa Smith (Duane), Daniel Meehan (Mary), and Anita Harris (Todd); and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents Donald and Carmella Meehan.
