Edwin Francis Monier, born July 29th 1954 to parents Ervin Joseph Monier and Evelyn Hill Monier. He was the youngest boy of seven siblings, and preceded in death by brothers, Ervin Jr. Monier II, Frank Clarence Scott, sisters Mona Lisa Watkins, Nona Mae Padres, and survived by Samaiyah Monier, Joycelyn Monier, and Sereta Monier-Ward.
“Oops I bumped my head” the first complete sentence in nine month old Eddie’s repertoire, proved to be the theme of his rollercoaster life and future. He was a sweet, silly, and happy child who loved to make his sisters laugh. He enjoyed tinkling away on the piano and strumming the guitar and while playing with toys humming his own theme music. Edwin attended St Peter’s Lutheran Elementary School in San Leandro, California and California Concordia High School and College in Oakland. He excelled in sports, his favorite basketball. Excellence paid off. Senior year he was awarded a college scholarship, unfortunately before he could graduate, he was stricken with Schizophrenia. There were many ups and downs throughout his life but we would like to celebrate the ups, in addition to how support and love helped him rise above these challenges.
With a mother’s loyal love and a doctor’s care he was able to work at Pacific Security bank, where over time he advanced to Senior loan officer of his branch. He also was a Teacher’s Aide for the Oakland School Board for many years. At age 51 he suffered a major stroke. After rehab and much effort, he was able to work again at the Habitat for Humanity, HABI, as a cashier, got his own apartment and began taking care of himself.
In October 2020 he began feeling unwell and was given the news that his kidneys were failing. He began attending meetings at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses and studying the Bible with Gene Trejo to find strength and comfort.
In time, he became physically weaker and needed more care. With great love and support Ed was cared for. March 2024 our sister Samaiyah and her husband Don took him in to their home. On April 23rd, 2024 Edwin Francis Monier passed away quietly in his sleep, on our maternal grandmother Olivia Hill’s fabulous Big Tube Trumpet brass bed.
