Herman Othniel Hutchinson died peacefully in his sleep on June 8, 2022 at Tucson Medical Center hospital. He was born on the Caribbean Island of Jamaica, West Indies on March 19, 1931. Herman was the first child of Henry and Rosa Hutchinson’s 13 children that survived childbirth in rural Jamaica. He grew up in the rural community of Middlesex, 12 miles from Ocho Rios and 40 miles from Kingston. His mother and father provided Herman with a firm foundation in Christianity, self-respect, a responsibility to help his fellow man, and an insatiable appetite to conquer any challenge he faced.
As a young man, Herman’s bicycle was his primary source of transportation. He rode his bike from Middlesex to Guys Hill, about 8 miles one way, every day, on a rugged road, where he worked as an electronics technician. This was the beginning of a legacy of exercising on his bicycle that spanned 90 years. Later, Herman’s work as an electronics technician in Guys Hill would be his ticket to leave Jamaica for the United States.
Herman was 28 years old when he met the love of his life Linnette Watson, and it was love at first sight. They were married on September 15th, 1963 and they raised five children. In 1968 with 5 children and very little career opportunities in Jamaica, Herman and Linnette decided to immigrate to the United States. Linnette traveled first to the US, where she found employment as a nanny in Westport, CT. Herman arrived in the US 12 months after Linnette, and he found employment as an electronics technician. Herman and Linnette secured an apartment in 1970 which prepared them to bring their children to the United States.
In 1974 Herman and Linnette purchased their first home in an affluent area of Norwalk, CT. This spacious home would serve as the focal point of Herman and Linnette’s greatest legacy. With a clear understanding of their Christian responsibilities and being the oldest siblings in each of their collective families, Herman and Linnette served as sponsors for 14 families from their closest relatives to immigrate from Jamaica to the United States.
God has blessed Herman immensely since meeting Linnette in 1958. He is survived by 7 siblings: Clarence, Velma, Hope, Gloria, Denise, Pauline and Milton, five children: Michael (Marilyn), Hugh (Carol), Kathleen (Duane), Andrea (Paul), and Gary, 13 grandchildren and one great grandson. He is predeceased by 3 siblings, Roy, Hermine and Sybil, a grandson, Brian and a granddaughter, Michelle. Herman and Linnette retired to Tucson, Arizona in 1998 where they share a beautiful home. They are regular attenders of Christ Community Church.
Through all the challenges Herman faced and endeavors he undertook, after 91 years of life Herman remained a great man of Christian faith and a role model for his family, his friends, his neighbors, and anyone that he came in contact with. Rest in peace Herman Othniel Hutchinson.
