Jerry Don Nowell was called home to be with the Lord on June 14, 2020 shortly after he was showered with love, laughter and prayers by his entire family. Born on August 15, 1936 in Peacock, Texas, he is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 64 years, Kay, and their two children, Connie (Ken) Lyons & Jerry (Sue) Nowell. Jerry also leaves behind a strong legacy of six grandchildren, Dan Lyons, Greg Lyons, Jeff (Ashley) Lyons & Shelly (Andrew) Jaeger, and Clint Nowell & Chad (Lauren) Nowell, as well as, seven great grandchildren, Faith Nowell, Gracie & Scarlett Nowell, Amy & Sean Lyons and Rebecca & Joseph Jaeger. He is also survived by two sisters, Betty Jo Lowe and Jean (Bob) Winans.
Jerry and Kay were founding members of Palo Verde Baptist Church where Jerry enjoyed singing in the choir and playing on the church softball team for many years. His family cheered him on at every game he pitched. He also enjoyed bowling with friends on many different leagues over the years. Jerry served in the National Guard for 3 years. He worked 40 years for Mountain Bell Phone Company and could tell you stories about seemingly every place in town where he installed or worked on the phone lines. Many memories were made traveling with Kay and his kids on their annual vacations in their VW van with the pop-up top.
He enjoyed his retirement years, attending every possible event that his grandchildren were a part of and volunteering to help in a variety of school activities. Jerry also worked for the University of Arizona as a ticket taker for football, basketball and softball games where he would often offer good advice to the players on how they could improve their game. In his later years, he enjoyed getting out and about riding his 3-wheel bike and could regularly be spotted all over town, though insisting he was never there.
Jerry never knew a stranger, often engaging in lengthy conversations with anyone he met. He will always be remembered for his faith, friendly and jovial personality, strong work ethic and dedication to his family. He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
