Joel was born on October 16, 1934 in Birmingham, Alabama to John and Rose (Quartararo) Favara. In 1961, Joel married his angel, Joyce Satterfield. Together they raised four children: Mark, Lisa, Ellie and Teresa (Nemer). He was blessed with five grandchildren: Alaina, Paul Jr., Hannah, Jake and Josh. He is survived by the former and the latter, including his brother, Blaise (Cynthia), his sister, Faye (Jeff), several extended family members and close friends.
Joel attended St. Peter & Paul MS and Tucson HS in Tucson, Arizona. He earned his degree in Education on a football scholarship at Oklahoma State University—Go Pokes! Joel coached high school football in Comanche, Oklahoma; Safford, Arizona; and Sunnyside High School in Tucson. He earned a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from the University of Arizona and retired as a District Administrator from the Sunnyside School District.
Joel was inducted into the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame for his legacy as an outstanding football player (High School All-American Running Back) and award winning coach (Safford, Arizona -1962 State Championship, AZ Prep Coach of the Year). The primary message of his acceptance speech was that something good will come out of all life experiences. . . even the very difficult ones.
Joel had a passion for God, his family, football, and helping others. He brought laughter and joy to his family with his innovative games for the holidays and told stories that would resonate for a lifetime. Handy with the duct tape and his tools, Joel was ready to take on any project—often with his best friend from college, Bob.
The memory of Joel will continue to inspire laughter, love, and kindness in everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His influence will continue to teach new lessons and instill meaningful values for generations to come. Although his body is gone, his soul is in heaven and his spirit remains among us.
A celebration of Joel’s amazing life will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations may be sent to The National Football Foundation/Southern Arizona Chapter.
