Joe Brookes, 87, went to be with the Lord on September 1, 2015, at the Southern Arizona Veterans Hospital in Tucson, AZ. He was born November 18, 1927, to Stanley and Margaret (Wishart) Brookes. Joe was born in Philadelphia, PA. He attended Northeast Catholic High School for Boys as well as the National Barber School of Philadelphia, PA. Joe was a veteran of the US Navy, serving in both World War II and the Korean conflict. After he left the service, he began working for several trucking companies in Philadelphia, PA, and eventually retired with Cowan Moving & Storage in Colorado Springs, CO. Joe had a huge heart. When he and Janet retired they moved to Madison, SD, to care for Janet’s mother, Rev. Jeanie K. Sherman. He always said that his happiest days were while living in South Dakota. He is survived by his wife Janet of 30 years. His children; J. Richard (Pam) Brookes of New London, CT, Barbara Faragelli of Philadelphia, PA, Mary June Yowell of Simla, CO, and Barry (Melissa) Ciemiewicz of Laurens, SC, as well as numerous loving grandchildren (11) and great-grandchildren (10). Joe had a love for animals and always dreamed of opening a pet shelter to help those animals that needed extra loving care. His love of traveling was apparent when he and Janet RV’d for several years traveling from one coast to the other. He was a member of Legion Post 39 of Manitou Springs, CO for 50 years, serving as Commander for two of those years. Joe was a former member of Elks Lodge 309 of Colorado Springs, CO. In his leisure he enjoyed playing board and card games with friends and family. We loved him dearly and he will be greatly missed, and in our hearts. We know that we will see him again. May God forever grant him love and peace. Love you always Pop Pop. A gathering of family and friends will be held in December, in Colorado Springs; to celebrate Joe's life. He loved a good party so bring your dancing shoes.
