We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Joseph (Joe), Underwood who departed from this world on February 23rd, 2025, at the age of 97. Joe was a beloved father of 5, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather of 17 others and will be dearly missed by everyone who knew him. Joe is survived by his children, Dave (Pat), Underwood, Diann Machen, Gary Underwood, Christy (Steve) Foley and Becky Aguilar.
Joe was born on October 18, 1927, in Nashville, Arkansas, where he spent his early years. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the US Navy Reserves during WWII and spent at least part of his enlistment in the Aleutian Islands in the Bering Sea. Later he was recalled to Active Duty during the Korean Conflict. Following his Naval service he and wife Rosemary made their home in Washington, D.C., where they were both employed with the FBI for a period of time. Poor health would necessitate their moving to Tucson, AZ for its warm, dry climate. It was in Tucson that they lived for 70 some years and raised their family.
Throughout their life, Joe was known for his integrity, honesty and straight forward approach to life. He was an outstanding provider for his wife and 5 children and eventually came to work with the civil service, spending countless years at Davis-Monthan AFB. His friendships and contact with other civil servants and military members continued until his death.
Following the retirement of both him and Rosie they traveled extensively throughout the world. Joe was an avid golfer and enjoyed it for many years, but as age crept up he was relegated to enjoying golf on TV. DIY projects and “honey-do” lists occupied much of his free time.
Our father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather will be so deeply missed but will be reunited with his wife Rosie in heaven. Rest in Eternal Peace.
Visitation will be held at East Lawn Mortuary on Friday, March 14, 2025, from 6:00-7:00 PM, followed by the Rosary from 7:00-8:00 PM. Funeral Mass will be concelebrated on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at 10:00 AM at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church.
