January 28, 1935 – January 27, 2025
Kathleen Smith Thomson (known to family and friends as Kay), beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2025, just one day shy of her 90th birthday. She was born in Montreal, Canada, and grew up in Philadelphia, PA, before making her home in Tucson, AZ, where she lived for over 50 years.
Kay was the cherished mother of Kathleen, Eileen (Bob), Colleen (Barry), and Mary Therese, and was preceded in death by her son, Michael. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Christina and Demi, and leaves behind a close-knit family, including cousins, nieces, nephews, and numerous lifelong friends.
Kay had a profound impact on the lives of many. She worked at the University of Arizona Cancer Center for over 20 years, where she became the first person to greet patients newly diagnosed with cancer. With a warm smile and a comforting presence, she provided a sanctuary of love and compassion to hundreds during their most difficult times. Kathleen also volunteered with hospice during the early days of the AIDS crisis, offering her unwavering support and kindness to dying patients and their families.
A lover of music, Kay was especially fond of Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand, often filling her home with their timeless tunes. She had a passion for travel, and after retiring, she had the joy of visiting Europe and spending treasured moments with friends and family on vacations in Mexico.
Kay’s legacy of compassion, kindness, and joy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and everyone whose life she touched.
Celebration of Kay’s life to come.
