

Lois Ungar Banes (born August 19, 1932), a resident of Handmaker Jewish Services for the Aging, left us suddenly on July 29, 2014. She was born to Sarah Drucker Ungar and Irwin K. Ungar of Cincinnati, Ohio, and grew up in the city, attending Walnut Hills High School and the University of Cincinnati. After living in Denver, she moved with her husband, Leonard Banes, and their children to Tucson in 1967.
She worked for many years at the Catalina Foothills Unified School District as a special education aide and librarian. Lois was a member of Sigma Delta Tau, the Jewish sorority, and of the National Council of Jewish Women. She was a longtime member as well of Sweet Adelines, the international women’s barbershop singing group.
She leaves behind her children, Marianne (Gregory), David (Candilyn), and Susan; her grandchildren, Annie Banes and Sarah Banes, Derryk Brown, Fabian Copelin-Brown, and James Graves Brown; her brother, Robert (Loris) Ungar, and his children, Howard and Linda; and many beloved friends. She sends them much love and wishes for them all peace, joy, and beautiful music. Donations in her name may be made to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona or Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona. A memorial service will be held at Handmaker Jewish Services, 2221 N. Rosemont Blvd., on Monday, August 4, at 1:00 p.m.
