Richard Dean Koleas, beloved father, brother, grandfather, entrepreneur, and respected leader in the asphalt emulsion industry, passed away on February 18, 2026, in Laguna Niguel, California, at the age of 86. He was born on May 14, 1939, in Memphis, Tennessee.
Driven by curiosity and a strong work ethic from a young age, Richard pursued his education at the University of Arizona, Pima College, and Orange Coast College. He briefly served in the United States Navy before beginning a lifelong career that would help shape the asphalt emulsion industry. Over the years, he built a reputation as an innovator and entrepreneur, ultimately founding Western Emulsions Inc. He was a founding member of the Asphalt Emulsion Manufacturers Association (AEMA) and was later honored with induction into the AEMA Hall of Fame in recognition of his leadership, innovation, and lasting contributions to the industry. Richard inspired many through his knowledge, mentorship, and dedication to his work.
Work was his passion for much of his life. After the loss of his beloved wife, Ramah, he faced many difficult years marked by personal struggle and reflection. In the final months of his life, he turned more fully toward his faith in Jesus Christ and found peace as his journey drew to a close. His final season was made gentler through the devoted care and companionship of his longtime caregiver, Maya Buckley, whose kindness and steady presence brought him comfort and dignity.
Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Ramah; his son, Ronald; and his sister, Sue Fields. He is survived by his son, Robert Koleas; his grandchildren, Katie Scott, Davis Koleas, and Joey Allen; his great-grandson, Hudson Scott; his sister, Demarious Koleas; and many loving nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at East Lawn Palms Mortuary & Cemetery Chapel, Tucson, Arizona, on March 7, 2026, at 9:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to YWCA Southern Arizona, 525 N Bonita Ave, Tucson, AZ 85745, in honor of Ramah’s lifelong compassion for women and families in need.
Richard’s legacy lives on through the people he mentored, the industry he helped shape, and the family who loved him.
