Robert L. Parrish 83 years old, a proud and dedicated career Air Force Master Sergeant retiree passed away peacefully at his home on the morning of June 6th . He is survived by his wife of 63 years Dora, his four children Christina, Robert Jr., Helene, and Ronald, nine grand-children and thirteen great grand-children.
Robert was the younger of two boys born in Grant County Nebraska to Clarence and Maria Parrish. He grew up in North Platt Nebraska and left home at the age of 17 to enlist in The United States Air Force. In 1950 Robert was assigned to Davis Monthan AFB in Tucson Arizona, where he met and married his wife Dora. He stated he knew he was going to marry her the moment he met her. During his 22 years of service to our country he received many decorations to include the Bronze Star in 1969 for perfecting the Pathway I laser guided missile system. He developed the illuminated cross hairs that allowed this system to engage in accurate night time operations. His Commander wrote in his citation that “This modification allowed the weapons system to be employed successfully under conditions that were previously thought impossible.” Later in life when recounting his experience in the military he enjoyed talking about the people he served alongside, places he went, and cultures he observed. He often downplayed his many accomplishments, preferring to speak about them only in terms of opportunities to think outside the box and problem solve.
In 1973 Robert retired from the Air Force, and settled with his family in Tucson Arizona. He held the firm belief that the family he and his wife created was his greatest accomplishment, and throughout life worked hard to provide for them. He taught his children through actions and words the value of effort and taking initiative when confronting challenges.
He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Of his hobbies, his greatest passion was for woodsmithing. He enjoyed designing and building furniture, he even built his own workshop on the family property.
Robert truly was an exceptional man; sensitive, caring and always willing to help those around him. He also wouldn’t have approved of the adoration of these words. For him the satisfaction was found in helping others and making a difference, not the recognition. He never liked being the center of attention. We even joked that the only reason he acknowledged his birthday was because of the German chocolate birthday cake.
Bob, I feel blessed to be able to call you my husband and will cherish the 63 years of memories we have shared. You will be missed dearly. Just know we are grateful to have had you in our lives, and your children are proud to call you Dad. You will always be with us.
Love
Dora
