Born in New England, Roberta enjoyed happy early years surrounded by a large extended and proximal family of builders, fisherman and farmers. Roberta, with her parents and younger brother, migrated west at a young age, spending her adolescent years in northern Arizona. She loved the proximity to the Grand Canyon and spoke fondly of experiences shared with those dear to her. Hunting and fishing with her dad, attending school – she was president of the rifle club, singing around the piano at evening gatherings with family and friends, caring for and enjoying time with younger siblings, were especially impactful for the wonderful lady we all know her to be. A charming photo captures a young Roberta enjoying the canyon landscape with that unforgettable twinkle of optimism that she carried throughout life.
Those who knew Roberta were aware she had her share of challenges. Yet, it is her relentless, contagious positivity and strength that bring inspiration and comfort to all who cross her path. Some decades ago, as a recent cancer survivor, she shared with her faith congregation that “the Old Gray Mare ain’t what she used to be”. Pausing to let those well-known folk song words sink in she then declared with her signature smile, “She’s better!” That is Roberta - always growing stronger, always getting better.
Roberta stayed engaged throughout life, working in her community as a 5th grade teacher, shortly after her graduation from Brigham Young University. She also served later as a substitute teacher and volunteer art teacher in many local public schools. She loves playing piano, singing and music, particularly with children. She reflected often, in her later years, on traveling and performing throughout the Western states during a summer college Opera Workshop program.
She loves her church community, serving in diverse ways throughout her life. Faith remains a foundational element for Roberta that centers on love for her Lord with all her heart, and with all her soul, and with all her mind. Her neighbors and friends understand her inclusive nature. Her family community includes her sweet husband of 66 years, sons, daughters, parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, grandsons and granddaughters, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews – all deeply touched by her. We, her family and family of friends, will miss her greatly, and watch for that brighter day that her life attests will await us all.
