With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of William Eugene (Gene) Layne, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, who passed away peacefully on March 26, 2026, at the age of 90 after a difficult battle with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
William was born on November 9, 1935. He lived a life defined by dedication to his family, quiet strength, and a generous spirit. Throughout his 90 years, he built a legacy of love, resilience, and service that will live on through the many lives he touched.
William proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, a time in his life that reflected his sense of duty, commitment, and pride in serving others. He kept his commitment to serve when joining IBM as a computer technician followed by a self owned business.
Above all, William was devoted to his family. He shared a loving life with his wife, Cecilia Layne, whose companionship and care meant the world to him for 68 years. He was a proud and loving father to his daughters and he found great joy in watching his family grow through the generations as a grandfather and great-grandfather.
Those who knew William will remember his kindness and steady presence. He was a man people could count on—offering encouragement, support, and a vast knowledge of many things to family and friends alike.
Though Alzheimer’s and dementia took pieces of the man we knew, they never erased the love he gave or the impact he had on those around him. His family takes comfort in knowing that his memory will live on in their hearts and in the many stories that will continue to be shared.
He follows into heaven, his father William Finley Layne, his mother Helen Josephine Layne and his sister Joyce Galyon. He leaves his legacy of his daughters, Sheri Sotelo (Anthony) and Cynthia Bogle (Warner). His grandchildren Patrick, Troy, Vanessa, Nicole, Danielle, Scott and Kris. And his 11 great-grandchildren. His wife, Cecilia forever holds his heart.
William will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his loving family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A memorial service celebrating William’s life will be held on Friday, April 10, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Presbyterian Church. Family and friends are invited to attend and honor his memory. In lieu of flowers we ask that donations be made to Christ Presbyterian Church or Peppi’s House.
A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered.
