Alfred Maynard Jarshaw

Alfred Maynard Jarshaw passed away peacefully at home on September 1st 2011. He was born on May 3rd 1927 in Thief River Falls Minnesota. He was the youngest boy out of 9 children. After graduating high school he joined the United States Navy where he became a Seabee. During Al's military service, he met the love of his life Kathleen O'Brien whom he married on September 10th. They would have celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary this Saturday. During his Navy career, he and his family were stationed all over the Pacific as well as Japan and Puerto Rico. He was a Korean War veteran and very proud to wear his signature black & gold cap that adorned those same words. After serving 24 dedicated years to the Navy, in 1969 he retired an E-9 Master Chief who was highly respected by his peers and comrades as a knowledgeable leader. He then went on to obtain a bachelor's degree in business through the Evergreen State College which he used to build a successful family run real estate business where he would buy and develop rental properties. He and his wife Kathleen worked together running their business until Al decided to "really retire" at the age of 76. He was a very hard worker to say the least. He was a dedicated family man and would give the shirt off of his back to whomever may have needed help. He donated generously to many worthy charities and military organizations. Alfred was proceeded in death by his parents Frank and Tillie, brothers Elmer, Sammy, Irvin, James and his sister Pearl. He is survived by his wife Kathleen, his children Colleen Leavitt (Herb), Linda Moderski (Jim), Mark Jarshaw (Rebecca), eleven grandchildren, Dana Leavitt, Brian Leavitt, Justin, Ashley and Casey Wilke, Taylor Cody and Quincey Moderski, Josh, Jake, Thomas and his 1st great-grandchild, Karsyn Grace. A mass of Christian burial and resurrection will be held at St Michael's Catholic Church on Thursday September 8th at noon, a luncheon will immediately follow. There will then be a graveside service with full military honors including color guard held at 3:30 at the Honor Garden of Mills & Mills Memorial Park in Tumwater.
