Betty grew up in Breckenridge where she attended high school and business school. She married Mark Underberg in 1956. During their marriage they had three children Jeff, Jennifer and Melissa. Mark served in the military and during this time they lived in Fort Smith, Arkansas; Fort Belvoir in Alexandria, Virginia; and for two years in Nancy, France, before returning to Breckenridge in 1968. Together they built a family that was central to Betty’s life.
Betty later moved to Olympia, Washington, where she built a successful career, working for Transamerica Title Insurance, Capital Savings and Loan Association, and Virgil Adams Real Estate, Inc. A natural business woman, Betty was always ahead of her time, self-sufficient, hardworking, and confident in her abilities. She took pride in her strong work ethic, inspired by growing up with parents who both worked and valued independence.
Betty met Joe Alongi in 1997 through mutual friends. Joe knew she was a keeper because she liked to fish and be in the outdoors. Joe and Betty got married in 1998 where they shared deep love, laughter, and companionship. Together they enjoyed traveling, spending winters in Palm Springs and countless memories at their Packwood cabin. Those who knew Betty will remember her vibrant personality and zest for life. She loved fine wine, driving fast, collecting cookbooks, golfing and fishing. Her kitchen was the heart of her home, always filled with incredible food, laughter, and friends. Betty’s home was a place where everyone was welcome.
Betty was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her loving husband Joe Alongi, her son Mark Jeffrey Underberg (Kim), Joe’s children Tamera Schultz (Steve), Teresa Wallace (Aron) and Thomas Alongi (Linda), her sister-in-law Candi (Larry), her nine (9) grandchildren and six (6) great grandchildren whom she adored deeply.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Wilma Wahldieck, her daughters Jennifer Rice and Melissa Wrobel and her grandson Kurt Underberg.
A private graveside service will be held at Memorial Gardens on Littlerock Road. A Celebration of Life will take place at Saint Martin’s University at Worthington Center on February 3, 2026 at 11:00am, a place where Betty shared many happy memories. Go Saints!
Betty will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to sit at her table and be welcomed into her life.
One of Betty’s passions was helping students fulfill their college degree. In lieu of flowers the family would like donations to be made to the Joe and Betty Alongi Family Scholarship Endowment where her legacy will continue in perpetuity.
