Bev was born January 4, 1931, at South Bend Hospital to Torvald and Bess (Morehead) Trondsen. She was a tomboy growing up in Ocean Park, learning to play tennis and basketball, helping to harvest cranberries for Charlie Nelson and working as a cluster buster on the oyster beds. She also helped out at the family’s grocery store (now Jack’s Country Store), where she, in her words, “built her tennis muscles” by scooping hard ice cream into cones for summer tourists. Bev attended Ilwaco High School, excelling as a student and immersing herself in school activities such as plays and cheerleading. She graduated in 1948, a year in which she added yearbook editor to her academic resume. She went on to Washington State College, from which she received her Recreation degree in 1952.
In 1953 Bev married Robert “Pat” Hinkle, the son of Bob and Irene (Kaino) Hinkle and brother of Ardith (Woodham). Over the next three years, while Pat finished his degree at the University of Washington, Bev juggled the arrival of two baby girls and employment with the Ballard Parks Department. The now family of four moved in 1956 to Washington, D.C., where Pat worked for the US Government. A year and the birth of their third daughter later, the family headed back to the Pacific Northwest, settling in Tumwater. There, Bev raised six children, always supporting them in their endeavors. She shared with them her clever wit, compassion and generosity of spirit. She was a wonderful cook, teaching her children and grandchildren the “fun” damentals of baking, canning and jam-making. She demonstrated how creativity and artistic expression can be found in simple things like growing a garden or sewing a tennis uniform.
Always an active person, Bev volunteered at and then was employed by Michael T. Simmons Elementary School in Tumwater as a kindergarten classroom aid, where she was a favorite among the young children. She retired after twenty-two years in 1993. During retirement Bev travelled to Europe, tended her vegetable and flower gardens, baked up a storm, and was often spotted at her children’s or grandchildren’s activities. Her knitting needles flying as she watched their basketball or football games, over the years she produced dozens of beautiful sweaters, a warm legacy that will continue to comfort her family.
Bev was pre-deceased by husband Pat, brothers John and Torvald, Jr., and sister Barbara (Thompson). She is survived by her children Val (Tom) Frye of Seattle, Tracey (Richard) Lorenzen of Olympia, Erin Backman and Hilary Hinkle of Tumwater, Matt (Lisa) Hinkle of Shelton and Rob (Laurie) Hinkle of Olympia, by her grandchildren Katlyn (David) Glines, Hailey (Zach) Hill, “Rocky”, Clarke, Brennen and Daniel Hinkle, and great grand-daughter Elanor Glines. Also surviving Bev are her sister Dorothy (Jack) Williams, sisters-in-law Dorothy (John) and Kay (Torvald) Trondsen and many loving nieces and nephews.
