She was born to Mabel and Boyd Wright on May 5, 1932, in western New York State and in 1940 moved to the Olympia area with her family at age 7. She had two older brothers and older twin sisters, all of whom have predeceased her. She is survived by her second husband Stewart Gloyd and all of their combined family children.
Lois Wright graduated Olympia High School In 1949 and married a classmate, Loren Gregory in 1950. They lived in South Bay and had three children: Vicki Whitney (Rick), Dean Gregory (McCayne), and Mark Gregory (Carrie). In 1981, Lois and Loren divorced and she then married Stewart Gloyd, giving her three stepchildren: Don Gloyd (Eleanor), Anita Schatzer (Kenneth), and Karen Bergt (Russell). With this combined family, she eventually had 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
She and Stewart lived in their home on Long Lake in Thurston County until moving to Fieldstone Assisted Living in 2021. From 1989 until 2004 they had a second home in Southern California where Stewart was employed and Lois became very active in social groups there as well as hosting grandchildren visiting Disneyland. Lois was a dedicated volunteer in Olympia for the Seattle Children's Hospital and in California for the American Cancer Society. Lois became a skilled secretary and helped many managers and organizations to be efficient and successful. She worked for the Washington State Department of Transportation, primarily in the Bridge Engineering office, and she served as secretary or president of many groups.
Lois used her intelligence, along with a great smile and warm greeting, to make new friends wherever she lived, and to become a leader in social organizations. Her vivacious spirit seemed to transfer to others making her a popular person with lots of energy and good ideas. She organized and ran duplicate bridge groups and loved to host dinners and parties for area newcomers as well as family events. For many years she was active in the Lacey Community Church and sang in the choir. She enjoyed many adventurous travels throughout the US and around the world, loved to dance, camping trips, and for many years led a local hiking group in Olympia on day hikes. Lois was quite proud of climbing the peak at Machu Picchu at age 73. Lois was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, and the Olympia Newcomers club.
A celebration of life is planned for June 3, 2023 outdoors at the Tumwater Historical Park starting at 12 noon. A catered lunch will be served at 1:00 PM.
