With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Manuel Marcelino Machado on December 3rd, 2025, at the age of 82.
Manuel was born in the village of Ribeira do meio in Lajes do Pico, in the Azores, and took great pride in his Portuguese heritage.
Manuel's early years in Pico were spent in his father's butcher shop, where he learned the values of hard work and dedication—traits he carried throughout his life. After serving his country in the Army, stationed in the Azores, he embarked on a new adventure by moving to Castlegar, Canada. This is where Manuel and Fatima started their family together and where he devoted 35 years of his life as an Oilerman at the sawmill. Upon retirement, he and his first wife, Fatima, opened a grocery store, where he finished out his career.
Manuel was the beloved son of Deolinda and Joao Machado and was preceded in death by his first wife, Maria Fatima Machado, and his sister, Marcelina Jorge (Angelo). His journey from the Azores to Canada was filled with rich experiences, friendships, and a deep devotion to family.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Lou Rose Machado, with whom he enjoyed traveling across California, Canada, and the Azores. Known for his witty humor and playful spirit, Manuel often had a funny comment ready, bringing laughter to those around him. His passion for winemaking led him to craft homemade wine, which he joyfully shared with friends and family. Most recently, daily walks through his neighborhood were a highlight in his life, where he greeted everyone with a smile and loved sharing stories of his life.
Manuel's sons, Luis Machado (Karri) and Victor Machado (Sandy), and grandchildren, Robert, Michael, Madalena, and Elliana were the shining stars of his life, bringing him immense joy and pride. He is also survived by his siblings, Luis Machado (Kathy) and Virginia Chaves (Tony), along with many nieces and nephews.
Through his marriage to Mary Lou, he embraced a beautifully extended family, including step-children Jared Rose (Lori), Jeanette Rose Owens (Michael), and Dorene Arnold (Tom), along with grandchildren Heather (Mark), Heath (Vivian), Matthew, Rachel, Hannah, Kaela, and Noah. He found immense joy in his great-grandchildren John, Emma, Asher, and Myles, who filled his heart with love.
Manuel lived a life rich in family connections and the appreciation of simple joys. His presence will be dearly missed, but his memory will forever shine in the hearts of those who knew him.
A Recitation of the Rosary, followed by a visitation, will be held on Sunday, December 7, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Whitehurst-Norton-Dias Funeral Service, located at 286 West Main Street, Turlock, California, 95380.
Manuel will be laid to rest in Canada, where his family will be gathering to hold additional services in his honor. Details for the Canadian services will be announced at a later date.
May Manuel rest in eternal peace.
