C. R. Mauter

C. R. (Steve) Mauter, age 96, passed away April 5, 2026. Services will be Wednesday, April 15, 2026 at 11:00 am at Memory Chapel Funeral Home with Ron Martin officiating. Private family entombment will follow at Memory Hill Garden Mausoleum. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Steve was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Louise (Powell) Mauter of Tuscaloosa; parents, Clifton C. and Jewel (Westbrook) Mauter; sister, Wilma M. Goeller; brother, Fulton Mauter, and sister-in-law, Sarah Mauter, all of Cullman, Alabama.

He is survived by his sons, Barry (Tonta) Mauter and Kyle (Lamanda) Mauter, all of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; grandchildren, Kaitlin (Daryll) Spangler and Kyson (Patricia) Mauter, all of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Page (Michael) Holifield of Hartselle, Alabama; four great-grandchildren, William (Will) Holifield and Charles (Charlie) Holifield of Hartselle, Alabama and Kaley Mauter and Emily Mauter of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; several nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was a member of Taylorville Methodist Church, Tuscaloosa, Alabama and a former member of Alberta United Methodist Church, Tuscaloosa, for many years.

Steve was born in Cullman, Alabama on January 11, 1930; graduated from Cullman High School in 1948, served in the U.S. Air Force from January 1950 until December 1953 (three years in Germany) and was employed in the wholesale hardware business with Wimberly-Thomas Hardware Company of Birmingham, Belknap Hardware Company of Louisville, Kentucky, and Long-Lewis Hardware Company of Birmingham, Alabama until his retirement in July 1992. He and his wife enjoyed spending their retirement traveling the U.S. in their RV and returned to Tuscaloosa for their final years.

The family would like to thank Steve’s sitters who were with him the last months of his life: Miss V, Miss Doris, Regan, Gretchen, Miss Mattie, Emmanuel, and April. They were a blessing to Steve and to us. We would also like to thank everyone from Amedisys Hospice Care for providing Steve with excellent care and support.
