

Charles Elbert Kirk, age 82, of Tuscaloosa, died January 8, 2013, at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be held at 11am Saturday at Memory Chapel with Bro. Jimmy Garner officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Gardens with Memory Chapel Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Alice Brandon Kirk and his father, Homer Bartley Kirk; his sisters, Hazel Kirk and Doris Kirk Horton; his brothers, Norman Kirk and Lawrence (Mutt) Kirk.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Latham Kirk; his daughter Karla Kirk White (Jack); his sisters, Gene Kirk Vaughn (Tom), Sue Kirk, and Ferrel Kirk Smith (John); his brother Harry Glenn Kirk; his grandchildren, Felicia Layne Fair, Mary Joyce Fair, and Richard Nelson as well as many nieces and nephews.
Charles (Bub to his brothers and sisters) was born in Gordo, Alabama. He spent part of his childhood there then moved to Greensboro, AL and graduated from Greensboro High School where he played football. He joined the Army in 1948 and was a veteran of the Korean War. He served in the 25th infantry division and was awarded the combat infantryman’s badge, Korean Service Medal with Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Charles retired in 1969 as a Captain from the Alabama Army National Guard and was a member of the 31st Armored Brigade.
Upon his return from Korea, Charles went to work for the Alabama Power Company and started as a lineman. He eventually went to work in the engineering department and retired with over 39 years of service in 1992.
He was a devoted husband and a wonderful father. He was strong in his faith and loved the Lord. He had an unselfish spirit, always thinking of others before himself. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was an avid Alabama football fan and didn’t miss watching a game. He enjoyed camping with his wife and friends and spent many years doing that with his family.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Walker, Hugh Jackson, Matthew Latham, Tyler Latham, Lawrence Kirk, Jr, and Steve Kirk.
Honorary Pallbearers are his doctors and the nurses of CSICU, who were so kind to us and took such good care of him, and the management and staff of Morning Pointe Assisted Living Facility.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association or to one’s favorite charity.
