

DUNCANVILLE – Duncanville – Deroy Simpson Wood, age 94, of Duncanville, AL, passed away April 30, 2020. A private graveside ceremony with be held Thursday, May 7, 2020 at Memory Hill Gardens with Memory Chapel Funeral Home directing. Born in Elrod, AL, he and his family lived at Pioneer Lumber Company Camp. He grew up fishing the Sipsey River and hunting the land with his father. He spoke of his childhood with great pride. He often reminisced the time he spent at the camp with joy. He loved to catch rides on the old steam engine carrying the logs to the mill. His father worked as the train engineer. At 13, he and his family relocated to Duncanville, Alabama. He attended Tuscaloosa County High School and enlisted in the Army at 18. He served his country with honor, a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge. Upon his return to Alabama, he married and raised three children. He served 39 years working at the VA and painted homes as a side job, he provided well for his family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jerry S. and Lena P. Wood. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mary Lois (Burroughs) Wood; his daughter Marilyn Roberts (Tim); his daughter Helen Hagel (John); his son Larry Wood (Donna), Sisters. Irene Massi, and Bonnie Faye Boswell; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He lived a long, full life and is now with His Lord and Savior.
