Elizabeth L. Powell

Mrs. Powell was born January 19, 1928 in Tylertown, Mississippi, where she completed high school as valedictorian of her class. Graduate of Millsaps College in 1949, MA (1958) and EDS (1970) degrees from the University of Alabama.

She taught in Grenada, Mississippi from 1949 - 1952 and 1955 - 1956, Jackson Mississippi City School Spring of 1960. Tuscaloosa City School from 1960 - 1961 and 1973 – 1990. University College of Education Spring of 1969 and 1970 - 1973. She was named Jacksonville State Teacher of the Year for Elementary Level for Tuscaloosa City Schools in 1990. She retired from University Place Elementary School in 1990.

Lib was an active member of Forest Lake United Methodist Church from 1960 until death. Choir member, Office Volunteer, Sunday School teacher, Stephen Minister, United Methodist Women Serving as treasurer, vice president and president. Served as treasurer of the Tuscaloosa district United Methodist Women for 4 years.

She was a former member of Beta Chi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, having served as treasurer and chapter president. Member of University Women’s Club. Meals on Wheels volunteer weekly from 1990 – 2017.

Honorary pallbearers: Jo Francis Findley, Lucy Season, Jean Mason, Members of Forest Lake United Methodist Chancel Choir, Members of her Sunday School class, and Neighbors in Brookhaven.

She is survived by her sons, Milton (Renea), Richard (Patricia), and Robert. Grandchildren Hilen Powell Wilson, David Powell, Harrison Powell, Brian Powell, Kate Powell, Danyell O’Bryant. Four Great Grandchildren. Nieces and Nephews: Marjory Morford, Ledi Trutna, Kay Lavish, and Sam Sivewright, Tom McDonald, Jason McDonald.

A visitation for Elizabeth will be held Friday, January 17, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Forest Lake United Methodist church, 1711 4th Ave, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401. A celebration of life will occur Friday, January 17, 2025 at 11:00 AM, 1711 4th Ave, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401. A committal service will occur Friday, January 17, 2025 at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park, Cottondale, Cottondale, AL 35453.
