

Joseph L. Powell, age 81, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama passed away on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at Hospice of West Alabama. As requested by Joes wishes, there will be no formal service. A Celebration of Life will be Saturday, May 31, 2025 at 11:00 am at Duncanville Baptist Church located in Duncanville, Alabama officiated by Bro. Ray Hallman.
Joe was a loving father and grandfather to his grandchildren and children. Growing up in Bayou LaBatre, Alabama he worked on a shrimp boat in his younger years. This prompted him to attend the University of Alabama. He obtained his BS in business administration, then an MS and Eds in Special Education. He worked as the Principal at Oak Hill School for special needs children for many years. This inspired him through his retirement to open the Red Rooster Mini Farm located in Coker, Alabama. Later in Life he decided to bring Fresh Seafood to the Tuscaloosa area. He sold shrimp on the side of Hwy 82 at Buddys Food Marts from his truck. He was well known by many as Bayou Joe. The family and many friends will deeply miss Joe's laughter and witty sense of humor.
Jospeh was preceded in death by his father, George E. Powell; mother, Willie Mae Powell; brothers, Maurice Powell and Edward Nicholas Powell.
He is survived by the mother of his children, Sherry Powell; sons, Joseph Todd Powell (Elizabeth), Michael Toby Powell (Kelly); sister, Marilyn Wilcox (Dallas); brothers, George Doug Powell Sr., Don Powell (Mira); grandchildren, Isabel Powell, Alex Powell, Hayden Criss (Clay); great grandchild, Miller.
Joseph L. Powell was a native of Bayou LaBatre, Alabama.
