

Judith Lindsey Howington, age 77, of Tuscaloosa, AL, passed away January 7, 2024 at DCH Regional Medical Center, Tuscaloosa, AL. A memorial service will be held at Heritage Chapel Funeral Home and Cremations on Thursday, January 11, 2024, at 11 a.m. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. before the service at Heritage Chapel.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Earl Howington; her parents, Colonel Clifton Shelby Lindsey and Lois Patterson Lindsey; and her in-laws, Dr. Lumen Earl Howington and Jessie Avery Howington.
She was born in Tuscaloosa, AL, on July 10, 1946, and grew up as part of an Army family in Virginia, California, Germany, and Tuscaloosa, where she graduated from Tuscaloosa High School in 1964. While raising a family of four children, she earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Alabama. She then spent her professional career at the Tuscaloosa Public Library, where she worked for many years as Reference Librarian before retiring as Assistant Director.
In addition to her family and professional life, Judy was also an accomplished seamstress, a superb baker, and an avid reader with a particular interest in mysteries, espionage, and the works of Ursula K. Le Guin and Anne MacCaffrey.
She is survived by her daughters Susanna McClellan (John) of Tuscaloosa, and Amy Ward (the late Tony Ward) of Tuscaloosa; and her sons, Tim Howington (Julia) of Winthrop, MA, and Eric Howington (Samantha) of Valdosta, GA. She has eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: Mark McClellan (Kaydee), Lorianne Batte (Jeremy), Beth Matthews (Jamieson), Pate Ward, Jacob Howington, Noah Howington, Veronica Howington, Quinn Howington, Brigid Batte, and Eliza Batte. She is also survived by two sisters, Margaret Smith (Foss) and Janet Snowhill, one brother, Richard Lindsey (Paula), and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart and Lung Association or the S. D. Allen Ministries.
