in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He is survived by his wife Dianne Lawson Baker of Tuscaloosa; his
sister Emily Louise Baker of Tuscaloosa; his daughter Nelle Major Bashinsky Cohen and son in law John Aaron Cohen of Starkville, Mississippi; daughter Alice Lawson Bashinsky and son in law James David Crandall of Asheville, North Carolina; and his grandchildren Jordan Baker Cohen, Avery Lawson Cohen, Virginia Elizabeth Crandall, and James Patrick Crandall.
Omer was born in Tuscaloosa on December 2, 1931 to Louise Adams Baker and John Powell
Baker. He attended the University of Alabama and the Medical College of Alabama. He
completed a residency in internal Medicine and was Chief Medical Resident at the University of Alabama in Birmingham in 1963. He returned to Tuscaloosa in 1964 where he practiced Internal Medicine until 2003. He served as a captain in the United States Air Force as a physician. He was chief of the medical staff of DCH Regional Medical Center and also served on the board of that hospital.
Omer was a long time board member of the Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra, a lifetime
member of the Society for the Fine Arts, a board member of the String Quartet Society of
Tuscaloosa and on the board of the Phoenix House of Tuscaloosa. He was honored as Patron of the Arts by the Arts and Humanities Council of Tuscaloosa.
A service will be announced at a later date with Heritage Chapel Funeral Home & Cremations, A Dignity Memorial Provider handling arrangements.
