It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Stanley Ryba, who passed away in his home on June 8, 2025, at the age of 81. John was born on April 13, 1944, in Durham, North Carolina, to James John Ryba and Frances Emily Young Ryba. On January 30, 1965, John married the love of his life, Josephine "Josie" Ryba, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Together, they forged a beautiful partnership filled with love and wonderful memories. John was a loving husband and father, and he is survived by his beloved wife Josie, daughter Beth Ryba, and sister Laura Hollingworth.
John was not just a devoted husband and father; he was also a man of intellect and honor. He pursued higher education at the University of South Alabama, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics. This academic achievement laid the foundation for a career that was as distinguished as it was varied. In 1963, John embarked on a path of military service, joining the United States Navy, where he served on nuclear submarines until 1970. He then joined the Coast Guard, serving from 1973 until his retirement in 1991 as a Lieutenant Commander. After his military service, John transitioned into the private sector, working as a consultant for various shipyards. His expertise in the field was highly regarded, and he dedicated himself to ensuring the safety and efficiency of the operations he was involved in.
Beyond his career and military service, John was an active member of his community. He was a devoted member of the United Methodist Church and participated in many organizations such as the Military Officer Association, Mensa, the Tuscaloosa Democrats, and Blue River Democrats. John was passionate about giving back, volunteering at the local food pantry and serving as a statistician for local high school basketball teams. John had a wide array of interests and hobbies that reflected his vibrant personality. He was known for his delicious oatmeal cookies and salted pecans, his skillful carving of the Thanksgiving turkey, and his years long passion for restoring Saab automobiles. At the height of his “Saab days” he had acquired thirteen Saabs, four of which were parked at the home, to the chagrin of a few neighbors. John was also an avid reader and lover of country music, and for years would meticulously grade each song on an album. John found joy in the small pleasures of life, bringing happiness and warmth to those around him. John will be remembered for his loving nature, his generosity, and his ability to connect with both friends and strangers alike. He had a directness that was refreshing (and occasionally irritating) and a heart full of love. He lived a life marked by dedication, love, and service, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by family and friends alike.
A celebration of John’s life will take place on August 14, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Heritage Chapel Funeral Home. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance and honor the legacy of a remarkable man who lived life to the fullest.
