Roland A. G. Oliver, 91 stepped into the loving arms of Jesus on February 9, 2017 at Northport Medical Center, surrounded by his family. He was loved by so many and answered to many names of those who thought the world of him. Papaw was a go-getter at life and took every opportunity to seize each day with a phone call to a loved one, a project he was working on or making something become a treasure that could be deemed somebody else's trash. He was so adventurous in his time here on earth, traveling all over North America, South America, Asia, and the Holy Land. He loved to go! He was known as a "jack-in-box" because you never could keep him down. Roland was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Betty Oliver and his parents, Arlee and Myrtie Oliver.
He is survived by his two children Lynn Robertson (Tim) and Tim Oliver; his four grandchildren Kellyn Dickey (Jeremy), Kaley Wood (Chris), Adron Oliver and Andrew Oliver; great-granddaughter Tallulah Wood, close family-friend, Joe Gilliland and special buddy Ollie. He faithfully served in United States Navy in World War II and loved sharing his stories of his time on the aircraft carrier. Alabama Power Company was a huge part of his life where he worked for 35 years as an agricultural engineer. He spent much time working at the Alabama 4-H Center in Columbiana where he had a special room named after him. He was a member of the Energizers, Kiwanis Club, Alumni Association at Auburn University and East McFarland Baptist Church. He loved the Lord and loved his family. Education was such an important part of his life, and he was a prominent part of all his grandchildren attending and graduating college. We will miss him so much, but take comfort in knowing he is having the greatest family reunion and time of singing and praising his Savior. Visitation will be Monday, February 13, 2017 from 12:00 – 2:00p.m. at East McFarland Baptist Church with a celebration of life to follow after with Pastor Doug Reeves officiating and Memory Chapel directing. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 in Baileyton, Ala. Pallbearers will be Tim Robertson, Jeremy Dickey, Chris Wood, Andrew Oliver, Joe Gilliland, Jamie Pearson, Josh Hodges and Mike Bush. Honorary pallbearers are past and present employees of Alabama Power Company and the past members of Shelton State Woodworking Class. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to East McFarland Baptist Church.
