
Ruth Marie Cox Farmer, age 92, of Tuscaloosa, Ala. died February 13, 2017 at DCH Regional Medical Center. She was born July 15, 1924 in Northport, Ala. at home. Her family moved to Peachtree, Ala. and lived there until she was 4 years old. She attended Verner Elementary School and graduated from Tuscaloosa High School in 1941 where she was a majorette. Her senior year in high school she joined the Million Dollar Band via invitation from Colonel Butler where she played the Glockenspiel and became one of the first females in the band. She continued to play in the band during her college years playing the Marimba and was also a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority.She graduated from The University of Alabama in 1945 and began her teaching career. Ruth taught 1st Grade at several elementary schools including Northport Elementary, University Place and Cottondale.She always loved running into students later in life and she would always recognize them and they her.She returned to UA and received her Master's Degree while teaching.After retirement she moved to Gadsden and spent 9 years helping raise her 3 grandchildren which she thoroughly enjoyed and became involved in her community hosting luncheons for her new friends.She always enjoyed helping people and was very talented musically. She enjoyed making cross stitch pictures for special occasion gifts for friends.She was baptized in Forest Lake in 1935 and was a charter member of Forest Lake Baptist Church. She spent many years volunteering in many capacities including delivering Meals on Wheels and visiting people in nursing homes. She enjoyed cross stitching, participating in Women's Missionary Union (WMU), traveling and playing her Marimba, and later in life she loved watching Alabama Football.She never wavered in her faith in Jesus Christ and loved reading her Bible, singing and playing gospel songs. She was a great Mother, she was greatly loved, and she will be missed by all. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, February 17, 2017 at Memory Chapel Funeral Home with Pastor Donald Payne officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Gardens with Memory Chapel Funeral Home & Cremations, a Dignity Provider directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home.She is survived by one daughter, Dana Farmer Maxwell (Ray) of Gadsden, Ala.; one son Trip Farmer; one sister, Cathy Cox Earnest; grandchildren, Raymond Edward Maxwell II of Gadsden, Ala.; James Judson Maxwell (Jennie) of Ft. Payne, Ala. and Mary Avery Maxwell Wigley (Jorden); great-grandchildren, JohnMichael Wigley, Matthew James Wigley, Noah Maxwell Wigley, Emma Katherine Wigley all of Rogers, Arkansas.She is preceded in death by her parents, David Eldridge Cox and Violet Marie Simons Cox.Pallbearers will be Ray Maxwell, Judd Maxwell, Raymond Maxwell, Jordan Wigley, Bill Hibbard, ChuckLeach and Bennie Earnest.
