He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years Mary Ellen Chandler Hall; infant daughter Terri Hall; daughter Toni Hall Averette; granddaughter Mari Frances Averette Davis; parents Archie Lee and Argyle Hendrix Hall; five sisters: Sara Bell Newton, Annie Ruth Boyd, Adelaide Love, Peggy Taylor and Betty Jo Dunn; two brothers: John Hall and Lee Hall and his beloved twin brother Pat Hall.
He is survived by his grandson Rusty (Laura) Averette; three great grandchildren: Miller Caroline Averette, Russell “Rhett” Averette Warren Averette, Jr., and Mary Rose Davis, his beloved companion for over 20 years, Delores Sargent, and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.
Sam was a Veteran of the United States Army, serving in Japan from 1952-1954. Upon returning home, he worked for Gulf States Paper Corp. for 35 years and retired from the Tuscaloosa County Board of Education. He came to faith in Christ at the age of 32. He served faithfully in the church as a Deacon and was a faithful Sunday School Teacher and a long-time member of Gilgal Baptist Church for over 30years. In his “off time” and following retirement he spent his days tending to cows, planting gardens, painting houses, working on the farm and “trading.”
He spent his final two years of life with the loving staff of Hamrick Highland’s Assisted Living Facility built on his old home place. They became like family to all of us. The family wishes to thank Greg and Susan Hamrick and all of the staff at Hamrick Highlands for the loving kindness they showed to him every day and his niece Martha Ellen Chandler, and Nancy Pearson and Annette Lowe who cared for him in his last few weeks of his life.
