Soheer “Kathy” Hamood Yassin went to her final resting place August 7th, 2025. She was preceded in death by parents Nashaat Zaki Hamood and Kareman Porham El-Horebrey, Mohmaud Mohammed Yassin (husband), Christopher Jay Johnson (son-in-law) and her beloved son, Samir Mahmoud Yassin. She leaves behind her children Susie Marie "Sugar" Carter, Sammy Hamood Yassin "the brains,” and granddaughter Natasha Ann Bills, sons-in-law Calvin Colbert and Bryant Carter. Our mother was loved beyond words.
This Egyptian queen grew up in the countryside of Alexandria, Egypt and moved to the United States with her husband to pursue the American dream. Her and her husband took part in several entrepreneurial roles—from owning a motel in Nebraska, to owning and managing restaurants, convenient stores, laundromats, and multiple different residential properties throughout Alabama.
She learned most of her English from soap operas and her interactions with customers. She always made sure her children stayed on top of their studies and never accepted anything less than an ‘A.’ If not already witnessing her greatness wasn’t inspirational enough, she only inspired her children to grow up and have big dreams.
She kept the dreams in motion when her husband went between states and still never allowed for any of her children to miss out on a childhood experience, with her big ol’ camcorder and Polaroid cameras there to capture it all. She nurtured her children like no other and always made sure they stayed covered in love and celebration during each and every moment.
She embraced her older son’s condition following a horrible reaction to a vaccine that resulted in lifelong brain damage, and only loved him even harder. Although he required her attention around the clock, she never let that stop her from giving the same amount of love and attention to her other children, including her granddaughter.
She loved unconditionally and following her husband’s passing, never remarried and continued to dedicate her life to raising her children while managing several properties.
She defeated breast cancer in 2014 and had been in remission ever since and still didn’t cease to be an amazing support system to everyone else.
She persevered through suffering with chronic back pain, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus; but, yet and still, always stepped out wearing a smile and never met a stranger anywhere she went. Those who knew Kathy will remember her for her big heart and her sweet and sometimes spicy personality.
She devoted her life to making sure each and every one of her children were happy, healthy and hopeful and selflessly never made others feel like they were too much to handle. She stood by her family no matter what and will forever be cherished for her incredible resilience and dedication.
