1938 – 2026
Virginia Cox, a woman whose life was a beautiful symphony of service, education, and adventure, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy as resonant as the music she loved. Born in Washington, D.C. in 1938, Ginger, as her friends called her, carried the warmth of her Southern roots with her through every chapter of her remarkable 88 years.
A Life of Harmony and Learning
Virginia’s journey was defined by a lifelong passion for knowledge and the arts. A proud graduate of College Park High School (Class of 1955), she went on to pursue her love for music and education at the University of Georgia. After graduating in 1959, she dedicated her professional life to nurturing the next generation.
As a cornerstone of the Tuscaloosa City Schools music department, Virginia didn't just teach notes on a page; she gave hundreds of aspiring musicians the gift of confidence and self-expression. Her "thriving music career" was measured not in accolades but in the many students who still carry a tune because of her steadfast guidance.
Beyond the Classroom
When she wasn't tuning instruments or conducting orchestras, Virginia found joy in the simple pleasures of life:
The Gentle River: She was an avid enthusiast of riverboat cruising. There was nowhere she felt more at peace than on the deck of a traditional paddleboat, watching the shoreline drift by to the rhythm of the water. On the Greens: A familiar and friendly face at the City of Alabama golf course, Virginia spent countless hours volunteering. Whether she was helping coordinate a tournament or simply enjoying the fresh air, her dedication to her community was ever-present.
A Lasting Legacy
Virginia was a devoted mother to her three children, who remain her proudest accomplishment. She taught them the value of a high note, the importance of a steady hand, and the joy of a slow boat ride down the river.
Her family and friends will remember her as a woman of grace, wit, and unwavering kindness—a Georgia peach who bloomed beautifully in Alabama. Virginia Cox’s song has
ended, but the melody lingers on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
"Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life
to everything." — Plato
