Zachary Franklin Davis (“Zach”), born April 21, 2002, passed away at home on May 13, 2023 after a months-long fight with brain cancer. Attending him were his parents, Mike and Vickie (Deslattes) Davis, brother Stephen, and brother-in-law Bryce Duncan. Mourning him along with them are grandmothers Dorothy Sue Deslattes and Barbara Ann Davis; aunts and uncles Joseph and Linda Deslattes, Larry Deslattes, John and Rachel Gould, Conner and Amy Davis, and Paula Davis; cousins Chelsea Flesch, Trevor (TJ) Flesch, John (Trey) Gould III, Emma Gould, Will Davis, Sarah Davis, and John Davis; and many great friends including best friend Emma Schaetzle. He was preceded in death by grandfathers Huey Deslattes and Willard Davis and uncle, Officer Philip Davis.
A natural with all things computing and digital, Zach was a master at video games, programming, photography and chess. He enjoyed sharing his musical talent on guitar and bass guitar and attending the concerts of a wide range of musical artists: rock, Americana, funk, indie, jazz, and classical. He loved to travel, especially favored Mexican and Asian cuisines, and was in the middle of planning a trip to England. He loved his dogs, Lily and Nick. Zach attended Holy Spirit Catholic School, graduated from the Alabama School of Mathematics & Science, was a National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist, and studied at Shelton State Community College and the University of Alabama-Huntsville. He worked as an Assistant Store Manager at Gamestop in Tuscaloosa and Northport. His dry sense of humor and sharp wit, passion for arguing politics, and love of talking about anything technical will be greatly missed.
The family would like to acknowledge his care teams at UAB, especially Doctors Burt Nabors and James Markert, the nurses in NSSU, as well as Doctors Susan Bostick and John Crew, Radiation Technologists Louise Manos and Alison Traweek at The Manderson Cancer Center. We cannot express our gratitude to the staff at Alabama Hospice Care and Liz Whitehead, who made it possible for Zach to be with us at home. To all who visited, sent food and messages, and just loved Zach before and during his illness, we thank you.
You are invited to memorialize Zach with a donation to EndBrainCancer.org, Manderson Cancer Center, or the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, by supporting a musical artist, or hoisting a beer to him at an independently owned pub or restaurant.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 17, 2023 from 11 am to 1 pm followed by a simple service at Heritage Chapel Funeral Home, 5200 Old Birmingham Hwy, Tuscaloosa, AL 35404 with Father John Fallon officiating.
