July 7, 1944 – March 20, 2011
James (Jim) Stanley Brown, 66, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Sunday, March 20, 2011. Jim was the 2nd of 6 children born to Douglas & Laura Brown on July 7, 1944 in Twin Falls, Idaho. He graduated from Twin Falls High School in 1962 and attended Brigham Young University for 2 years. After serving a 2-year LDS mission in Texas, he married the love of his life, Georgia Kay Moncur on August 17, 1967 in the Idaho Falls Temple for time and all eternity. They gave birth to their first son, Jim Jr., on November 4, 1968 and their second son, Brent, on August 5, 1970. After brief stints in Washington and California with American Greetings Corp., the family returned home to Twin Falls where Jim joined the family business at Claude Brown’s Furniture. He retired from the family furniture business in 2005.
Jim was an avid golfer, sports fan, teenage “gearhead” & car enthusiast. In 1968, Jim purchased a bright red AMC Javelin. Over the years, his love of this car has become symbolic of our family and has provided many special memories. As a young parent, he enjoyed playing with his 2 boys, coaching their youth teams and teaching them the right way to play their various competitive sports. His greatest joy was his time spent with family and friends on the golf course. He was an accomplished golfer, accumulating 3, yes 3, holes in ones and was the Net Club Champion at Jerome Country Club in 2005. One of his favorite activities was setting up Georgia in the trees, while playing her drive from the middle of the fairway in Friday Night Chapman tournaments. He loved the time spent each Thursday with his golf buddies, trading jokes and barbs with them on a weekly basis. The friendships that he made on the golf course transcended off the course into valuable, life-long relationships. He enjoyed the competitiveness of sports so much that he became a referee for high school football and basketball all over the Magic Valley for 20 years. Nothing sounded sweeter to his ears than a good old barbershop harmony and he enjoyed singing with the Twin Falls Magichords. He belonged to Toast Masters for over 30 years and enjoyed improving his speaking skills, telling stories and spending time with friends.
The most important aspect to Jim’s life was his friendship with other people. It didn’t matter who you were, he was able to be your friend without judging you and was truly a friend to all. He could have a conversation with total strangers and they would leave with a new friend every time. When someone needed help or there was work to be done, he was always the first in line to help.
In 2003, his life changed with the addition of grandchildren. Lauren and Nicholas became the apple of his eye and the feeling was mutual. He loved visiting them in Texas and allowed Georgia to spoil the kids as much as possible. He always said, “it’s better to get on the train than to get ran over by it.” The time he spent with them will always be cherished.
Jim was a High Priest in the LDS Church and held numerous church callings. He loved to teach lessons in Priesthood meeting that would make you go home and do additional studying. He had a strong testimony of the gospel and found great comfort in his knowledge of our Heavenly Father’s plan of Salvation. His faith was felt by all who knew him.
His death was preceded by his older brother Doug Jr. and is survived by his wife -Georgia; sons – James Jr. and Brent (Tina); parents – Douglas and Laura; brothers Bob (Cathy), Dick (Jacque) and Keith (Debbie), and sister – Sherri (Dean) Johns and grandchildren – Lauren and Nicholas Brown.
Son, Brother, Husband, Father, Grandpa, Friend…You are loved by ALL!
