Norma was born on December 4, 1918, in Fairview, Idaho. She was the second of two girls born to John Milton and Sarah Shumway Biggs. Norma was close to her older sister, Loraine Haskell, throughout her life. Even as adults, they never lived more than a few blocks apart and raised their families together. For the last several months, they even lived across the hall from one another in the Bridgeview Care Center. Loraine preceded Norma in death by just four weeks.
An Idaho resident all her life, Norma attended elementary school in Greenwood and graduated from Hazelton High School. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Idaho State University. She was a life-long learner.
On April 5, 1942, she married Oscar Warren Hellewell. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They made their home in Burley until moving to Twin Falls in 1957. She and Oscar had two children: Nancy and Ronald. Oscar died in 1976.
Norma taught school in Acequia, Heyburn and Burley. After moving to Twin Falls, she continued teaching for another 23 years – first at Morningside Elementary and then at Sawtooth Elementary – until retiring in 1981. Of her time teaching, Norma said she made lifelong friends and worked with outstanding students.
She traveled extensively, especially during retirement, visiting England, Egypt, Norway, Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand, and taking many trips to spend time with her children and grandchildren.
Throughout her life, Norma served in auxiliaries of the LDS Church at both stake and ward levels. From 1983-84, she served as a missionary for the LDS Church in Oakland, California. She served a second mission in the Atlanta Georgia Temple from 1988-1989. Ever since her time in Georgia, she’s been rooting for the Braves.
She was a member of the local chapter of the Alpha Delta Kappa National Honorary Society for Women Teachers and was an active member of two literary clubs until the end of her life. Norma worked as a volunteer at the Buzz Langdon Visitor Center and Twin Falls Public Library.
She is survived by her children Nancy (Doug) Metcalf and Ron (Elaine); her grandchildren Courtney (Cade) Evans, Wyatt (Tatiana), Kelsey (Jon) Garrett, Emily, Adam (Amanda), Ryan, and Laura (Robert) Brown; and great grandchildren Conner, Hunter, Sadie, Audrey, Sebastian, Fritz, Callahan, and Tennyson.
The Funeral service will be held on Monday, October 6th, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS church located at 2085 N. Temple in Twin Falls, Idaho. A viewing will be held from 9:30-10:45 a.m. Monday before the service. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of White Mortuary “Chapel by the Park.”
