Alma Adrienne Morin Phillips passed away on December, 10th, 2021 at the age of 99 and will be deeply and lovingly missed by her husband, Ray of 71 years, her daughters Michelle (Kiki) and husband Andy, Leslie and husband Gerry and son, Brian. She was born in Montmagny, Canada on July 11th, 1922 to the late Amedeé and Alida Guimond Morin.
After the loss of her mother at the age of 3, she spent her childhood in Montmagny in the Catholic orphanage. She later moved to So. Berwick, ME learning English as a second language and graduated from St. Joseph Academy in 1941. She worked at the Maine Baking Co. until 1950 as an office clerk.
She married Raymond J. Phillips in 1950 in Lewiston, ME. While they were courting and after marriage they belonged to the New London Motorcycle club and made frequent trips to Maine to visit family. She moved to New London, CT and they started a family, raising their 4 children in Oakdale, CT.
She was a quiet, unassuming woman and was happiest when creating a home for her family or working alongside her husband in the family's home business, The Ngraver Company since 1976. Brilliant with numbers, her upbringing never afforded her the opportunities to thrive in a field of her own. But she proved to be a huge asset to her husband and together they worked and traveled all over the United States, demonstrating and selling their tools and equipment at trade shows till they were both in their late 70’s. She was fascinated with the history of her adopted country and each trip provided chances to do side trips to museums and attractions, which she loved. She excelled at sewing and needlecraft, and her grandchildren fondly remember her butterscotch cookies. Her frequent slip-ups with English slang were adorable.
She was predeceased by her only sister, Bernadette in 1986 and her son Harry in 2019. In addition to her husband Ray and children, she is survived by her grandchildren, Ethan, Rachel, Benjamin, Zachary and James and 2 great grandchildren, Gabriel and Nicholas.
The family would like to take the opportunity to thank the entire staff at Crescent Point in Niantic for their warmth and caring towards our mom where she and her husband have resided since May of this year. To a person, there was always genuine kindness and respect no matter the time of day and we will be eternally grateful we found our way to you.
A special thank you to Alexandra, who was with our family for almost 6 years. Alex formed a special bond with Alma and showered her with extreme kindness, affection and laughs. We are fortunate you came into our lives and for the loving care you gave to her in the last years of her life.
At the discretion of the family, there will be no calling hours and burial will be private. At my mothers wishes, any remembrances may be made to Backus Hospital in Norwich, CT.
