

Bill G. Elrod, age 68, passed away at his home on September 20, 2010. He was born in Atlanta, Ga. on May 7, 1942 to the late Gordon Floyd and Mary “Savannah” (Gore) Elrod. He married Dorothy (Gorman) Elrod on May 24, 2008 in South Windsor, CT.
Bill retired from the U.S. Navy after 25 years of service. He served on the USS Scorpion, USS Chivo, USS Jack, and USS Cavalla as a Chief Sonar Technician, and USS Billfish and USS Dallas as Chief of the Boat. He was one of the lone survivors of the USS Scorpion which was sunk on May 22, 1963. He then went on to work for Sonalysts, Tracor, Amgraph and retired from Electric Boat in 2007. He was a member of the Masons and the Submarine Veteran’s Club. Through all of his accomplishments Bill always remained a modest man and cared deeply for his family and friends.
In addition to his loving wife Dorothy Elrod of Oakdale, he is survived by his beloved sister Nancy Elrod Wright of Houston, TX, a son Gordon Elrod and his wife Tammy of Colchester, a son Patrick Garvey and his wife Neely of Poconos, PA., a son Michael Garvey of Milwaukee, WI, a daughter Colleen Bolland and her husband Paul of Newport News, VA., a daughter Dianne Sloan and her husband James of Dillsburg, PA, a stepson Joseph MacVane and his wife Lauren of Manchester, and a stepson Kevin MacVane of Manchester. He also leaves behind, 13 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and nephews.
Family and friends may visit the Montville Funeral Home of Church and Allen on Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A funeral home service will be held on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the United Way of Southeastern, CT., PO Box 375, Gales Ferry, CT. 06335.
