Dave was born on June 10th, 1947, to Percy (Joe) and Betty King in the coastal city of Brighton, England. Joe and Betty left England with their young family and moved to Kenya, Africa where Dave spent a few years as a young boy. After the time in Africa, the King family left Kenya and moved across the Atlantic to New York City and then eventually to Mystic, CT. Dave was a graduate of Stonington High School and then attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute until he entered the US Army where he proudly served until 1973.
After his honorable discharge, he became a Professional Engineer and Licensed Land Surveyor where he worked for many years at his father’s architectural firm, Chandler, Palmer and King in Norwich, CT. Dave eventually started his own land surveying and civil engineering company, King and Mullen, where he made many lasting friendships with his clients that endured over decades. Dave decided to leave the world of self-employment for a while and served as the Director of Public Works for the town of Montville and then Town Engineer for the town of Durham before returning to self-employment establishing A-2 Maps and Surveys, in which he ultimately, and reluctantly, retired from.
During his years with King and Mullen, Dave met his sweetheart, Christine (Kotula) Henson. They married in 1983 at Montville Congregational Church and spent 33 wonderful years together in Montville until Christine’s passing in 2016.
Known for his sense of humor, his big laugh, and the best bear hugs, Dave had many hobbies. When he wasn’t reciting one of his million dad-jokes, riding around town on his BMW motorcycle, or stating facts about the Civil War, he always kept himself busy. Friends and family could find him rebuilding one of his Triumph Spitfires, having fun as a member of the New London Motorcycle Club, or attending a multitude of Scottish Highland Game festivals throughout the Northeast. Dave proudly went on to head up the Mystic Highland Pipe Band and Manchester Pipe Band as the Drum Major where his son Andrew was a bagpiper for many years.
Dave was predeceased by his wife Christine, son John, his parents, and his brother Andy King of Price, Utah. He is survived by his life partner and best friend, Mary Zewe, whose hand lovingly held his over the past five years, and who gave him unconditional love, laughter, and care. Dave also leaves behind his son Brian King and his wife Carrie of Norwich, CT, son Daniel King and his wife Becky of St. Louis, MO, son Andrew King and his wife Tonya of Uncasville, CT, and his daughter Heather Saglimbeni and her husband Carmen of Deep River, CT. Also surviving Dave is his sister Valerie Modean and her husband David of Phoenix, AZ. Additionally, Dave will be missed by his grandchildren Kayleigh, Cameron, Liam, Anthony, Owen and Bronte, and his nieces and nephews Curtis King, Jill James, Matthew Modean, Jill Barnes, and Tom Piersa along with their respective families.
