Known for his devotion to God, wife, children, family and friends, Gary enjoyed a full life. Born in San Diego and raised in the Torrance area, he attended North High School, served in the U.S. Air Force where he was stationed in Alaska, and worked as an electrician leaving his spark on many high rise buildings and local restaurants in the Southern California area. After retirement, Gary proudly served as a custodian at Newman Elementary and custodian and a crossing guard at Cattle Elementary where he was just one of the kids. While standing on the corner, he liked waving at everyone and getting them to wave back. It was at this school where Gary performed on stage as one of the Village People, dancing to the song, Y.M.C.A.
On June 15, 1968, Gary married the love of his life, Ruth Cameron Thompson. Together they built their marriage on a strong Christian foundation and became proud parents to Geoffrey (Haruna), Heather Kinzie (Michael), and Christopher (Julie), loving grandparents to Joshua and Noa Thompson; Mitchell, Justin, Sarah, Elissa, Ashley, Emily, and Isaac Kinzie; Alison and Emily Berry and Ethan Thompson. Preceded in death by his parents, Bryan (Tommy) and Mary Thompson, Gary leaves behind his two beautiful sisters, Patricia Wright and Peggy Grote (Phil), and a host of beloved family members and friends. For all who knew and loved him, Gary was extremely dedicated and loyal.
A faithful servant to his Church, Gary was an Usher, assisted with the Missionary Program, helped with church cleaning, and would serve as chauffer to those who needed a ride. One could always count on him.
Gary enjoyed many past-times, but one of his all-time favorites was driving his cherished Forest Green 1966 Ford Mustang and participating in activities with the San Gabriel Valley Mustang Club, where the members will always remember him as “John Wayne” doing his classic burn-outs.
Gary’s ‘quick wit,’ ‘one of a kind’ personality, ‘wacky’ sense of humor, and ‘crazy’ toys will forever bring a smile. He was notorious for using hieroglyphics when signing cards, jotting notes for future reference in his chest pocket notepad, sharing endless stories, and his hilarious photography and videography skills. For all of this and so much more, Gary will be deeply missed and forever loved.
With deep appreciation the family would like to extend their sincere thanks for all the calls, visits and support received during Gary’s brave battle with cancer.
