It is with profound sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of David Kevin Meyler. He passed away peacefully at home in his sleep, with his wife Joan at his side, in Vancouver, BC.
He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, his four children Joseph (Elizabeth), Paula, Richard and Jacqueline (Daniel), and his two grandchildren Elliot and Oliver of Vancouver. David was predeceased by his father James Meyler. He is survived by his mother Elsie Meyler and siblings, Kathleen, Maureen, Pauline (Steven) and Stephen (Helen) residing in Ireland, Canada and England.
Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, he attended Oatlands College School, Dublin and then on to University College Dublin where he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. As a Professional Engineer, he emigrated to Vancouver, BC, in 1974. He began his career in Vancouver with BC Rail commuting daily to Squamish, BC. From there David progressed into senior roles within the railway industry. His career took him to New Glasgow, NS, with Hawker Siddeley Company in 1977, designing his first rail hopper car. In 1981 he arrived in Montreal, QC, with his wife and young family to join Canadian Pacific Railway, culminating with his position as General Mgr. Mechanical Technical Support Services in the Calgary headquarters from 1997-2010.
He retired in 2010 and began his global consulting role, taking him to Saudi Arabia, Australia, Mexico, Chile, China (Canarail) and Saskatchewan. He was an esteemed member of the railway community, a founding member of the Canadian Air Brake Club, Western Div. (CABC), a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA), and chairman of the Association of American Railroads (AAR) for several years.
David had a good life and took his Roman Catholic faith with him in all that he did. He was a kind, generous and loving person. His wit and sense of humour are not to be forgotten. As a Knight of Columbus at St. Gerard’s Catholic Church, Calgary, and St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, Vancouver, he was always there to lend a helping hand. David and Joan relocated to Vancouver in 2017, to be near their two children and grandchildren. He found a new beginning and made the adjustment to put the tools down, but not completely, and embraced condo living. David enjoyed many vacations and cruises with Joan, and always looked forward to his yearly trip home to Dublin, Ireland.
David and Joan were married for 43 years, they met on his 3rd day in Canada and created a loving lifetime bond. Although grateful for the time we all had together, it was not in God’s plan to have him with us longer. He will be greatly missed.
A Funeral Mass and visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 29th at 11 a.m. at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church 2028 West 7th Avenue, Vancouver, BC V6J 1T4.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in David’s name to St. Augustine School, 2154 West 7th Avenue, Vancouver, BC, V6K 0E3. Additional information can be found by visiting them at www.faithandfoundation.com .
