August 31, 1963 – October 10, 2020
It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden and tragic passing
of our son and brother, Doug, in Vancouver, BC.
Doug was born in Winnipeg and attended school in Windsor Park.
Doug spent his younger years going up to Grand Marais with his family,
where he spent time playing in the sand dunes, bike riding, and going
to the beach. Later on, summers were spent at the family cottage at Hillside Beach.
From a young age, Doug loved tuning into various radio
stations, usually through the shortwave radio his dad gave him.
Whenever you visited Doug, he would usually have music playing. After
high school, Doug started what would end up being a 30 plus year
career in the hotel industry.
In 1988, Doug went to visit a friend in Vancouver and fell in love with
the city. When he came back to Winnipeg and encountered a
snowstorm, his mind was set. Within a couple of months, he packed up
and moved to Vancouver. Doug started work at the Marriot Hotel, now
the Pinnacle Harbourfront, and was there for 30 years. During his time
there, Doug frequently mentored new staff and was known for his quick
smile.
Doug was predeceased by his father, Gordon, and his Aunty Bernice.
Doug will be sadly missed and remembered by his mother Janice,
brother Greg, sister Colleen and his niece Elizabeth. The family would
like to extend a special thank you to Doug's friend, Hugh, who has
helped the family immensely during this difficult time. We would also
like to thank the staff of the Pinnacle Harbourfront Hotel for sharing
their memories of 'Dougie' with our family.
Doug, words cannot express how much we miss you. We love you.
